Quality and product safety

The Dutch agriculture sector is known throughout the world as a reliable supplier of quality products. All the different links in the various production chains apply strict quality standards, and public law corporate bodies such as the Product Board Animal Feed ensure that maintaining such standards is a shared effort. The product boards are empowered to take measures to which all producers must adhere. Many producers also maintain their own supplementary quality policy.

Kwaliteitsbeleid
Food safety
The Product Board Animal Feed has a special quality programme for the Dutch animal feed chain that focuses on animal feed safety as a component of overall food safety. The motto of the programme, Feed for Food, suggests that animal feed and food for human consumption can never be viewed in isolation from one another. In addition to safety, the nutritional quality of food is a vital concern within this common quality policy.

GMP+HACCP
The Dutch animal feed sector applies the same quality assurance system as the international foodstuffs industry: pro-active quality assurance based on Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP). The HACCP risk management system complements the product board’s existing Good Manufacturing/Managing Practice quality assurance standards (GMP). The GMP+HACCP quality assurance system (known as GMP+ ) has been extended to the whole chain from raw materials producers up to and including the carriers and the livestock farmers. Independent auditors from certification bodies check on compliance with the regulation. Companies which are guilty of infringements may lose their GMP + certificates.

Early Warning System
The quality programme of the Product Board Animal Feed also provides for an Early Warning & Response System (EWS) EWS is necessary for the timely signalling and proper solution of potential hazards to humans and/or animals which might occur in spite of the preventive measures.

Tracking & Tracing
Tracking & Tracing is another specific element which is part of quality assurance. This involves a system and a method whereby the most accurate and rapid traceability of irregularities in batches of feeds and feed materials is possible. Good registration of details on batches of raw materials and feeds in the logistical process make it possible - in the event of contamination by an undesirable substance - to organise a recall quickly and to identify the source.

The best quality guarantees
The Dutch animal feed industry has one of the most advanced quality assurance programme in the world, developed in close collaboration with the dairy, egg and meat processing sectors. Dutch animal producers also aim to guarantee the highest quality standards. Livestock farmers that operate under the Dutch PVE/IKB and KKM quality assurance systems are required to use GMP feed.
