Animal Feed Road Transport Hygiene Code Approval

Intended for: animal feed companies and transport companies

The first national guide for good practice for the animal feed sector has been established. The Ministry of Agriculture has approved the Animal Feed Road Transport Hygiene Code. The guide is also known as the Hygiene Code. By applying the Code, animal feed companies comply under the Animal Feed Hygiene Regulation (Reg. (EC) no. 183/2005) with the law. By working with an approved guide the VWA (Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) audit of companies can take place more quickly and more efficiently.

The approval of the Animal Feed Road Transport Hygiene Code (see Ministry of Agriculture order) means approval of the procedure in the code with respect to the animal feed hygiene regulation. The guide does not take the place of the regulation. The regulation continues to be the basis for the regulatory authorities. For the regulatory authorities the guide is a guideline with which they can perform supervision more efficiently and more effectively on animal feed companies.

The replacement of the term ‘good practice guide’ by ‘Hygiene Code’ matches with foodstuffs  practice. The term ‘Hygiene Code’ has been in use there for some time. The Road Transport Hygiene Code was established in consultation with representatives of the interested parties. The Product Board Animal Feed then submitted the Code for approval to the Ministry of Agriculture. The Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (VWA) assessed the Code and its advice was positive. The Hygiene Code complies with the requirements of the animal feed sector hygiene regulation. It can be used for by the animal feed and transport sectors as a guideline for compliance with the animal feed hygiene regulation in as far as it relates to the road transport of animal feeds.

GMP+ -certified companies (GMP+ B4.1 Road Transport) already comply with the provisions of the animal feed hygiene regulation through participation in the GMP+ Certification Scheme for the Animal Feed Sector 2006. It has been made clear via a GMP+ B4.1 /  Road Transport Hygiene Code cross-reference table which provisions from the Hygiene Code have been included in which place in the GMP+ standards. GMP+-certified companies can use this to show, in the event of a Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority audit, that the requirements of the animal feed hygiene regulation have been imposed via GMP+-certification. This will allow the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority audits of the companies to run more quickly and more efficiently.
